Munich: Olympic Village

leave a comment »

Constructed in 1968, the TV Tower in Olympic village stands at almost 900 feet. The view from the top is nothing less than breathtaking. Sights to see include olympic center, which was constructed for the 1972 Olympics on an old airfield; the city of Munich, which stretches for miles and miles; and even the Alps which are way off in the distance, yet still ridiculously inspiring.

Olympic Village was constructed for the athletes of the 1972 Olympic games.  On September 5th, a Palestinian terrorist group Black September took hostage the entire Israeli team in their living quarters in the complex. By the time the ordeal was finished, 11 israeli athletes, 5 members of Black September, and 1 West German police officer had been killed. You can read more about the massacre here.  You still get a sense of this tragedy when at the complex even today. Sitting out front of the room at night where everything took place is an experience I won’t soon forget.
